This year’s celebration honors Nobel Prize-winning author and activist Wole Soyinka. Originally from Nigeria, Soyinka co-founded the Cities of Asylum movement with Salman Rushdie, Václav Havel and Jacques Derrida.

The Cities of Asylum is an international network of organizations committed to protecting and promoting freedom of speech and publication including the physical safety of writers.

Wole Soyinka is a Nigerian author, playwright, poet and political activist whose prolific body of work includes his debut novel The Interpreters. He was imprisoned in Nigeria for his criticism of the Nigerian government, and spent many years living in exile in Europe and the United States. Soyinka  was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, becoming the first African laureate.

Following a cocktail reception and dinner from our restaurant partner 40 North, Soyinka will be joined on stage by American writer Richard Wiley for a short conversation.
