This gory 1980 horror film uses a centuries-old superstition to start a cinematic franchise.

That superstition is rooted in the belief of ancient German tribes that the number 13 is unlucky, which in the 19th century became connected with the Italian idea that Friday is equally unlucky. The film “Friday the 13th” follows a group of young counselors who are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp which was the site of a child’s drowning and a grisly double murder years before.

Among this film’s interesting back stories is that accomplished actress Betsy Palmer (1926-2015) took her role to earn enough money to buy a new car and expected “Friday” to flop. Instead, it became a big hit that breathed new life in her screen career.
