The Pittsburgh Zoo opened as a zoological garden inside Highland Park in 1898 as a gift from civic leader Christopher Magee (1848-1901). The gardens evolved over the years to become a conservation-focused professional zoo. Today, the zoo strives to create environments that are as natural as possible for their animal residents and visitors to enjoy.
