This multi-dimensional, multi-media exhibition was developed to embolden authorship to families living in Hazelwood who lost their children to street violence.

Hazelwood is a neighborhood located in the city’s southeast, bordering on the Monongahela River. Hazelwood takes its name from the hazelnut trees which once flourished along the river. The neighborhood is currently experiencing many challenges, including crime and vacant properties.

The exhibit humanizes and nuances the lives of the young men who were lost and shows how survivors and the community continue to heal and re-build. The project examines what it means for a collaboration of designers, mentors and community members who together delve into the intangible shadows of what hurts, disturbs and stultifies so as to present something tangible that reveals, transforms and restores.
