The Pittsburgh Zoo opened as a zoological garden inside Highland Park in 1898 as a gift from civic leader Christopher Magee (1848-1901). The gardens evolved over the years to become a conservation-focused professional zoo.
The zoo strives to create environments that are as natural as possible for their animal residents and visitors to enjoy. This includes areas that mimic an Asian forest and a tropical forest and event an African savanna.
All mothers receive free admission when accompanied by one or more of their children.
