Professor Noël Carroll will use a “Sex and the City” episode to discuss the theme of consumerism in the series and the moral problems that it raises, especially in terms of the way in which it encourages viewers to shrug them off.

“Sex and the City” (1999-2004) was a cable television series about four women living in New York City who, despite their different natures and ever-changing sex lives, remain inseparable friends. The central character is Carrie Bradshaw (portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker), a nightlife columnist for a fictional newspaper. Fashion, sex, self-gratification, careers and finding true love are recurring themes.

The 2002 episode “A ‘Vogue’ Idea” has Carrie taking a job at Vogue magazine where she has trouble understanding the acerbic editor’s shallow view on relationships.

Noël Carroll is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is one of the world’s leading philosophers of art and is especially known for his work on film.
