“On Liberty: A Summoning” is a site-responsive exhibition and performance project by New York City artist Marianne Vitale rooted in the layered social and cultural legacy of the building that is home to Space Gallery.

The gallery is located inside an architecturally fascinating (original tin ceilings and exposed brick walls) and historically rich structure believed to have been built in the 1860’s. It has housed various businesses in its long life, but primarily performance halls and night clubs. Much of this history the building functioned as radically open spaces for queer nightlife.

Vitale reanimates this history through sculpture, performance, film and printed matter, creating a project that operates simultaneously as a formal exhibition and a series of live, time-based activations. Installed within a bar-and-stage framework referencing the site’s former nightclub configurations, the exhibition remains open daily as a sculptural environment and transforms into a functioning club during five designated Fridays between May and October.
