“Mattress” is based on the 1835 tale The Princess and the Pea, written by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson (1805-1875). It focuses on the challenges facing the lonely prince of a mythical kingdom in finding a bride. Out of nowhere comes the unconventional Princess Winnifred who quickly wins the prince’s heart — but not that of his mother, who devises an odd way to test girl’s worthiness.
Television comedy legend Carol Burnett became a star by portraying the title character in the original 1959 Broadway production.
