One of the greatest myths of Ancient Greece forms the basis to this classic 1762 opera written by German composer Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787).
According to legend, Orpheus was a great musician and prophet who participated in many adventures. One of these adventures is told in this opera, as Orpheus plunges into the very depths of the Underworld to rescue his recently deceased wife, Eurydice. The love deity Eros agrees to help on a condition that Eurydice may not understand or accept.
“Orpheus & Eurydice” is Gluck’s most popular opera and has inspired many future works — including the award-winning Broadway musical “Hadestown.” Presented by the Pittsburgh Opera, the eighth oldest company in the United States
