Inspired by the Tree of Life tragedy, make a handmade heart and tag it with a positive message that can be placed in public to share compassion throughout Pittsburgh.

On October 27, 2018, a mass shooting occurred at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh’s historic and normally quiet Squirrel Hill neighborhood. Eleven people were killed and seven were injured. The alleged assailant, Robert Gregory Powers, was reported to have been drawn into the white nationalism movement about twenty years earlier. He eventually discovered an online community of like-minded thinkers on the controversial web site Gab. Powers has been charged with 29 federal crimes and 36 state crimes. The shooting is considered to be the deadliest attack on America’s Jewish community.

In response to the attack, local artist Barb Grossman and her family started “PGH Hand-Made Hearts” to make and place handmade hearts in public places as vivid reminders of the power of kindness. Materials will be provided.
