The River City Brass celebrates the great American pianist and composer George Gershwin (1898-1937). His innovative works melded popular, jazz and classical music styles into a distinctive sound ideal for stage and screen.
Founded in 1981, the River City Brass (RCB) builds upon the long-standing tradition of brass bands popularized in Great Britain and the United States. RCB features 25 brass players and 3 percussionists.
A special component of this program is a semi-staged production of Gershwin’s 1935 opera “Porgy & Bess.” This groundbreaking piece of theater has provided an impressive platform for the finest African American performers since its debut.
