The result of a decade of work, this 2016 Japanese documentary film is an eye-opening, heartbreaking epic of the struggle for justice against government indifference.

Sennan is a small city not far from Osaka where a serious crisis emerged regarding asbestos — a set of minerals with multiple practical uses (especially for fire resistance) but come with serious health risks. This gripping documentary chronicles the real-life struggle of dying asbestos factory workers in Sennan to get justice from a Japanese government that refused to acknowledge its complicity in their illnesses and suffering.

Presented as part of the Silk Screen Asian American Film Festival, part of the nonprofit Silk Screen organization’s efforts to celebrate diversity and multicultural Asian and Asian-American experience through cultural events.
