Victor V. Bobetsky, a professor of music at Hunter College, presents the origins of the song “We Shall Overcome.”

“We Shall Overcome” began as a hymn published in 1900 that was written by an African-American minister named Charles Tindley (1851-1933). The son of a slave, the original hymn (titled “I” Overcome Someday”) is rooted in Black folk traditions.

Dr. Bobetsky will highlight several precursor songs whose texts and/or melodies may have influenced the “We Shall Overcome” we know today, and present melodies and texts with significance for the cultural experience and heritage of people around the world.
