Stanley Clarke is an innovative jazz bassist with a melodic and harmonically rich approach to his art.

Now a four-time Grammy Award winner, Stanley made his professional debut at 15-years old when he was invited by legendary saxophonist Byard Lancaster (1942-2012) to join him for a week of shows.

Stanley’s distinctive technique involves placing his right hand so that his fingers partially hook underneath the strings so that when released, the strings snap and produce a biting percussive attack. He is also an accomplished composer, writing the scores for films such as 1991’s “Boyz ‘N the Hood.”

Presented as part of the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, which celebrates a distinctively American art form. The festival is a project of the August Wilson Center for African-American Culture and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
