The entire family is encouraged to delve into this completely interactive production that chronicles the struggles of a boy destined to be the leader of a West African people.

That boy was Sunjata (1217-1255), who is credited with founding the Mali Empire (1226-1670). Traditional music, costumes and scenery whisk you away to a village compound where the storyteller guides you through his remarkable journey.

Sunjata’s story was an inspiration for the 1994 animated film “The Lion King.” The play’s title translates to English as “Sunjata for Youth.”

Presented as part of the Children’s Theater Festival, a project of the nonprofit Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and sponsored by energy company EQT.
