Just a week before its national debut, participate in a screening of a fascinating new television  documentary about a troubling period in American history and of how one man rose to the moment.

During much of the 20th Century, it could be dangerous for African-Americans to travel to and through certain states. New York City mailman Victor Hugo Green (1892-1960) responded to this situation by publishing what became commonly known as The Green Book. From 1936-1966, The Green Book was an annual guide to the restaurants, hotels and even whole towns that would accommodate Black people during an era of overt racism and racial violence.

The Green Book is also the subject of a 2018 feature film starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen.

A discussion follows the screening. The film will make its television premiere on Monday, February 25 on the Smithsonian Channel.
