A hit Broadway musical became a showcase for a stellar cast in this 1978 film.
That musical was “The Wiz,” a clever adaptation of the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum (1856-1919). The novel follows the adventures of a Kansas farm girl named Dorothy in a strange and mystical land called Oz. It was translated into a beloved 1939 film starring Judy Garland. Broadway’s “The Wiz” reimagines the novel within the context of African American culture, by adding jazz and rock songs to the otherwise unchanged story.
This film reinvents it further, by setting it in New York City where schoolteacher Dorothy Gale (portrayed by Diana Ross) who finds herself pulled into an urbanized Oz populated by characters played by Michel Jackson, Nipsey Russell and Ted Ross.
