This exhibition featuring more than 70 masterpieces collected by Pittsburgh-born collector and philanthropist, Paul Mellon (1907-1999) from every important school of French art from Romanticism through the School of Paris.

Romanticism was the artistic and intellectual movement that rose in Europe during the first half of the 19th Century. It was characterized by its emphasis on emotion, individualism and the glorification of the past. The School of Paris emerged a century later and refers to the artists from all over the world who made the French capitol a center for artistic activity.

The Frick will be the first of a select group of museums to present this touring exhibition, which includes three works by Vincent Van Gogh (1853–1890), Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Edgar Degas (1834-1917).
