Award winning Soviet actor and filmmaker Sergey Bondarchuk (1920-1994) helmed this acclaimed 1960’s adaptation of the 1869 novel War and Peace written by Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910).
The novel chronicles the history of the 1812 French invasion of Russia and the impact of the era on Russian society through the stories of five aristocratic families. This film, released in four installments throughout 1966 and 1967, starred Bondarchuk in the lead role.
