The complex and multifaceted intersections of motherhood and disability are explored through this immersive installation created by California artist Laurie Shapiro.

Laurie Shapiro’s immersive installations have been commissioned by various institutions and has been awarded Artists’ Fellowship Grant, Puffin Foundation Grant, and Center for Cultural Innovation Grant.

Mothers/parents who identify as disabled (and caregivers of disabled) kin face unique challenges that are often overlooked or misunderstood. “We Are All Connected” is composed of water-based paints and screen-printed drawings on vinyl over metal truss with handmade lighting. Stepping inside opens a world  pushing for greater inclusivity and equity.

This free, outdoor concert is being staged in the “Backyard,” a space in the parking lot located at the corner of Penn Avenue and Eighth Street. Presented as part of the Three Rivers Arts Festival, a 10-day celebration of visual and performing arts produced by the nonprofit Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and primarily sponsored by local financial firm Dollar Bank.
