France is a major European nation that extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea. Its recorded history dates to at least 600BCE. From the 15th through the 18th centuries, the French Empire was one of the world’s great powers.  The French language is rooted in Ancient Latin and is today spoken by some 270 million people primarily in France, Belgium and parts of the Middle East and Africa.
