Legendary writer/director Mel Brooks’ hilarious 1974 film brilliantly spoofs classic horror movies, especially the 1931 film “Frankenstein”.

The original film was an exceptional adaptation of the 1818 novel Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus written by Mary Shelly (1797-1851). The story is about a scientist and his assistant who dig up corpses to build a man animated by electricity. The project goes awry when Frankenstein’s assistant accidentally gives the creature an abnormal, murderer’s brain.

“Young Frankenstein” follows much of the 1931 film’s plot, only relocating it to the 1970’s and centering on Dr. Frankenstein’s reluctant grandson (Gene Wilder). His creature (Peter Boyle) gets a very different abnormal brain — which makes possible everything from singing and dancing to impressive sexual prowess.

An interesting bit of trivia: many of the lab set’s props were the same created by designer Kenneth Strickland (1896-1984) for the 1931 film. For more information, call (412) 904-3225.
