Calvary Episcopal Church was founded in 1855 by Mathilda Dallas Wilkins, wife of Judge William Wilkins (1779-1865), with initial meetings being held in an East Liberty drug store.

Founded in 1785, the Episcopal Church is a Protestant Christian denomination that is part of the Anglican Communion, which is anchored in the United Kingdom by the Church of England.

The present building on Shady Avenue is the congregation’s third church, commissioned in 1905 and completed in 1907. It was designed by Ralph Adams Cram (1863-1942), a leading exponent of the Gothic Revival style in the United States, based on the principles of 13th century English Gothic architecture. The stunning stained-glass windows were created by acclaimed British firm Heaton, Butler & Bayne, which designed and crafted such windows for nearly a century before closing down in 1953.
