This library branch serves the residents and businesses of the city’s busy South Side, which is located immediately south of Pittsburgh across the Monongahela River.

Established in 1890 through a gift by industrialist Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), the Carnegie is Pittsburgh’s public library system with 19 branches scattered throughout the city. The South Side began as its own municipality called Birmingham before being annexed by Pittsburgh in 1872. This living, breathing neighborhood has been continually evolving ever since, from farm land to heavy industry to the popular area for young professionals. Throughout it all, East Carson Street has remained the main South Side road.

The library is one of the more important buildings on East Carson. A handsome, one-story red brick structure, the Carnegie offers neighbors a bank of computers, meeting rooms and a strong book collection.
