Founded in 1875, Ebenezer Baptist became the first African-American Baptist congregation in Western Pennsylvania to own a church building with the purchase of this handsome structure in 1906. It has been a focal point for community programs and the civil rights movement.
The name “Ebenezer” is a variation of “Eben-Ezer,” a location referred to in the Christian Bible where battles between the Israelites and Philistines took place.
