Heinz 57 Center is a retail and office building.

The building was originally a major branch of the Gimbel Brothers (1887-1987) department store chain. Commonly called Gimbels, the chain had over 20 stores at its peak. The 13-story Pittsburgh store was constructed in 1914 as the company’s regional anchor.

After many years sitting vacant, the building was renovated and eventually took its current name after becoming the corporate headquarters of the food giant H.J. Heinz Company. Their signature product is Heinz Ketchup, a tomato-based condiment best known for their “57 Varieties” slogan.

In addition, the Port Authority of Allegheny County has its executive offices and training rooms in the Heinz 57 Center and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has several health services inside.

Gimbel’s retail legacy lives on, in a sense, through another anchor tenant: an impressive 3-story Burlington Coat Factory discount department store.

The building’s original clock remains hanging at the corner of Smithfield Street and Sixth Avenue and continues to function. Many locals still refer to Heinz 57 Center as The Gimbel’s Building. It is currently owned and managed by McKnight Realty Partners
