The Hunt Armory is a former storage for military weapons constructed in 1916 and named in honor of metallurgist, industrialist and war veteran Alfred E. Hunt (1855-1899).

General Hunt had served in the Spanish-American War (1898), a conflict over the island of Cuba between the United States and the Spanish Empire. A year before the war, Hunt started the Pittsburgh Reduction Company with an experimental smelting plant. That firm later took the name of the Aluminium Company of America (ALCOA). He died at the age of 44 due to complications from the malaria he had contracted during the war.

When it was constructed, the Hunt was surrounded by open fields. Since then the trendy neighborhood Shadyside sprouted around it and now the 90,000-square-foot armory sits in a densely populated residential area of the city. It includes an auditorium for events.

Today, the Hunt Armory is under the supervision of the city’s Urban Redevelopment Authority.
