Millvale is a small, historic suburb located north of Pittsburgh just across the city’s boundary. Around the time of the American Revolution (1765-1783), what is now Millvale was farm land and one of the original houses remains standing.

The town takes its name from a combination its location (a valley) and type of industry that was thrived there — primarily steel and lumber mills. At the community’s peak, it was also the home of stone works and breweries. However, as the nation’s economy shifted away from a reliance on heavy manufacturing, Millvale suffered from losses in businesses, jobs and residents.

Millvale’s business district is centered on Grant Avenue, where many of the buildings are handsome brick structures dating from the early 20th Century. The street was probably named in honor of former United States general and president Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1855), who died about a decade before Millvale’s formal creation.

In recent years, community leaders have been very active in reviving Millvale through various programs.
