The Neu Kirche Contemporary Art Center uses community engagement to support contemporary art and artists.

Its located inside a renovated building that began as the First Emmanuel Evangelical Church in 1889 for German immigrants and their families (the words “neu kirche” is German for “new church”). For generations, the church was an important center for what has become known as the Spring Garden neighborhood on the city’s North Side.

Many of the surrounding buildings are the original, simple wood-framed homes constructed during this period for laborers.

Today the center offers an intimate setting for artists of all disciplines to meet in a supportive environment with regular professional development opportunities, socially engaging public art programs and an international residency.

The Neu Kirche’s facilities include exhibit space, classrooms and event space.
