The Priory Hotel is a charming 42-room historic boutique hotel nestled in Pittsburgh’s vibrant North Shore with a connected event space called the Grand Hall.
A priory is a place where clerics gather and live communally (such as a monastery or convent). What is now the hotel and event space was completed in 1888 as St. Mary’s Parish to serve the neighborhood’s German, Austrian and Swiss immigrants. The parish was part of the contemplative monastic Order of St. Benedict (commonly called simply “Benedictines”). The order was founded in 429CE by Roman Catholic monk Benedict of Nursia (480CE-547CE).
The future of the complex was in doubt during the 1970’s when the state explored changes to a highway wending its way through the city. Eventually, local business executive Ed Graf (1939 -2025) and his wife Mary Ann acquired the property. They converted St. Mary’s into a hotel and event venue that included historic restoration.
With approximately 6,000 square feet of floor space, the Grand Hall can accommodate approximately 350 guests for a seated event (including a dance floor) and more than 500 for a cocktail-style event.
