Squirrel Hill is a vibrant residential and commercial neighborhood located in the eastern part of Pittsburgh.

It is believed that the neighborhood was named by native people and settlers after the black squirrels common to the area. The first recorded house was built in 1760 by a soldier long before Squirrel Hill became part of Pittsburgh. Squirrel Hill grew slowly and steadily but saw its most important period after the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865) when several of Pittsburgh’s richest families built substantial houses (including mansions). Starting in the 1920’s Jewish immigrants (mostly from Eastern Europe) found a welcome in Squirrel Hill and it remains the nexus of Jewish life in Pittsburgh.

The neighborhood’s business district originates at the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Murray Avenue. There are shops, restaurants, a community center, movie theater and library.

A leading neighborhood organization is the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition (SHUC). Established in 1972, the SHUC works to preserve, improve and celebrate the quality of life in Squirrel Hill.
