Classical violinist Leila Josefowicz (pictured) joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in performing a daring piece written by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957).

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

“Finlandia” is a tone poem written in 1899 as a covert protest against increasing government censorship during a period when Findland was controlled by Russia.
