The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is joined by gifted young singers to perform the beloved songs from the groundbreaking 1949 musical “South Pacific.”
Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).
The pioneering musical “South Pacific” adapts an award-winning collection of short stories by acclaimed writer James A. Michener (1907-1997) thanks to one of the theater world’s most prolific creative teams.
Set on a South Pacific Island during World War II (1939-1945), the story focuses on an American nurse who falls in love with an expatriate Frenchmen but has trouble accepting his mixed-race children.
The terrific score was written by composer Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) in partnership with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960). It includes unforgettable songs such as “Some Enchanted Evening” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair.”
