What is now the South Side originated in 1763 when English King George III (1738-1820) provided soldier John Ormsby (1720-1805) with more than 2,000 acres of land along the south bank of the Monongahela River as payment for his services during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Ormsby divided ii into four communities which were annexed by Pittsburgh in 1872. South Side soon became known as the center of America’s glass industry with more than 75 glass factories.
