East Carson street is the commercial heart of Pittsburgh’s historic South Side.

What is now the South Side originated in 1763 when English King George III (1738-1820) provided soldier John Ormsby (1720-1805) with more than 2,000 acres of land along the south bank of the Monongahela River as payment for his services during the French and Indian War (1754-1763).  Ormsby divided ii into four communities which were annexed by Pittsburgh in 1872. South Side soon became known as the center of America’s glass industry with more than 75 glass factories.

A legend suggests that the street was named in honor of Mary Carson O’Hara (?-?), the wife of soldier and businessman James O’Hara (1752-1819).

Today, East Carson Street is known primarily for its nightlife. Dozens of bars and clubs are house inside architecturally fascinating buildings (most constructed in the early 1900’s). They are complimented by an eclectic collection of  boutique shops.

Many of these businesses are members of the South Side Chamber of Commerce.
