Lawrenceville is one of the Pittsburgh’s largest neighborhoods and located only a few miles from Downtown.
It was originally an independent town founded in 1814 by the father of pioneering American composer Stephen Foster (1826-1864). The community was named in honor of United States Navy Captain James Lawrence (1781-1813).
Lawrenceville was annexed to the city of Pittsburgh in 1868.
The officially recognized U.S. Historic District is centered on Butler Street and includes an impressive collection of over 3,000 structures dating from the 1830s.
