A signature work by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), this daring opera had a scandalous debut in 1851.
The story centers on a licentious duke who happily seduces a variety of women (especially married women), despite being in love with the daughter of his court jester, Rigoletto. The two men quickly find their lives turned upside down after being cursed by the father of one of the duke’s many conquests.
“Rigoletto” is based on the controversial 1832 play “The King Amuses Himself” by French writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885), which seemed to unfairly depict royalty as despotic. The opera also caused scandal by treating the characters’ vices too lightly.
