This 2003 film is the third in a series of three epics depicting one of the English language’s most popular literary sagas — with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performing the award-winning score live.

That saga is comprised of two fantasy novels written by British author and scholar J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973) set in an Earth-like world reminiscent of the English countryside. This is a world populated by colorful creatures and influenced by magic.

The story continues the efforts of a young man named Frodo Baggins to destroy a magical ring in a distant volcano before an evil lord can use it to gain control over the world. But one of Frodo’s companions has his own secret — and sinister — plans for the ring.
