This 1940 musical is considered one of the finest animated films ever made — and, for these screenings, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs the score live.
“Fantasia” stars legendary animator Walt Disney’s (1901-1966) signature character, the loveable Mickey Mouse. It consists of eight animated segments set to pieces of classical music written by some of the Western world’s greatest composers including Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Paul Dukas (1865-1935).
The film opens with live-action scenes of members of an orchestra gathering against a blue background and tuning their instruments in half-light, half-shadow. But it’s the animation set to music which awes audiences — the result of more than 1,000 artists and technicians.
