This lush, award winning 1984 film tells a mostly fictional story about the pioneering Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) — with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performing the score live.

That story imagines a rivalry between Mozart and Italian composer Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) as they both come under the patronage of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790). It is told from Salieri’s viewpoint as some who both admires and resents Mozart’s success.

“Amadeus” won eight Academy Awards include Best Picture, Best Actor (for F. Murray Hamilton’s portrayal of Salieri) and Best Director (Milos Forman).
