The hills come alive with this beloved musical is the semi-fictionalized story about the legendary Trapp Family Singers.

The Trapp Family Singers were a popular choral group consisting of the widow and children of Austrian nobleman and retired naval officer Baron Georg von Trapp (1880-1947). After escaping the Nazis, the Trapp Family Singers successfully toured the U.S. before eventually settling in Stowe, Vermont on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. The family is still headquartered in that striking, 96-room alpine lodge.

With wonderful songs like “My Favorite Things” and “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” the musical relates how aspiring nun Maria Rainer is sent to the von Trapp estate in Austria to be governess for the family’s rambunctious children. Over time, Maria wins over the kids and begins a romance with their father. But the growing Nazi movement threatens their future.

“The Sound of Music” was the final collaboration of the innovative composer Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960).
