This exhibition brings together a wide range of Shaker furniture, architectural elements, tools and commercial goods, paired with newly commissioned works by contemporary artists and designers.
What are commonly known as The Shakers is technically called the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing. Formed in England during the 1740’s (and expanded to the United States in the 1840’s) this sect of Christians seeks a communal, egalitarian existence. They practice a simple lifestyle, with limited technology and take pride in handmade items. The sect earned the moniker “shakers” because of their ecstatic behavior during worship services.
The exhibit reveals the complex social, material and spiritual context that created the Shaker style and what possibilities its values offer today.
