First staged in 1959 and written by Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965), “A Raisin in the Sun” is considered one of the great American plays.

The story focuses on an African-American family in Chicago as they attempt to improve their financial circumstances with an insurance payout while dealing with issues of housing discrimination, racism and assimilation.

The play’s title come from a passage in a 1951 poem composed by writer and activist Langston Hughes (1901-1967).
