The Pittsburgh Dance Council closes out its 50th season with a special performance by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company — the first company ever presented by the Pittsburgh Dance Council in its inaugural season.
African-American choreographer and activist Alvin Ailey (1931-1989) is credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African-American participation in 20th-century concert dance. He founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company in 1958. It has grown into one of the nation’s leading modern dance organizations.
The Pittsburgh Dance Council is now a unit of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
