With a brilliant score by the iconic composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021), the musical “Assassins” presents a dark exploration of the American Dream.
The musical uses the framing device of an all-American (yet sinister) carnival game. The players are a collection of misfits who have something terrible in common — they have each targeted a U.S. president for assassination. Through their stories, “Assassins” considers what their presence in American history says about the ideals of their country.
“Assassins” was first staged in 1990 and its 2004 revival earned theater’s highest honors.
