The remarkable architecture and history of Trinity Cathedral provide the ideal stage for this production by inventive local troupe Quantum Theatre about a little known literary giant.

English poet Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770) rose from poverty to begin publishing impressive works at age 11. He cleverly skirted the conventions of his time by masking his passionately romantic poems as that of an imaginary 15th-century poet called Thomas Rowley. As a struggling writer, Chatterton failed to secure a patron and began penning political works, eventually committing suicide at age 17. Nevertheless, Thomas Chatterton has inspired many other artists (even painters), including the 1987 historical novel by contemporary British writer Sir Peter Ackroyd which forms the basis of this play.

The clever plays offers a trifecta of three artists — Chatterton, Ackroyd and poet George Meredith (1828-1909) — as they live in colorful London during three different eras, each filled with fascinating characters bristling with humor. They engage in deep debates on what is real, what is fake, asking is anything “authentic” in the intertwining worlds of art and commerce.

Presented in conjunction with the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, a program of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust that features exhibits and performances making their North American, United States or even World debut.
