Peruvian-born artists Claudia Martínez Garay and Arturo Kameya have collaborated on an installation that explores Peruvian identity as shaped through collective memory.

Located on South America’s scenic Pacific Ocean coast, what is now Peru has been home to several cultures for thousands of years. More recently, it has been a Spanish colony which became independent in 1821. The succeeding years have included periods of instability and dictatorships.

Various works examine how colonialism, state power, cultural extraction and historical narratives have shaped Peruvian culture and identity.

This exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Carnegie Internation, the continent’s oldest program of contemporary art from around the globe.
