Performed in English at a nonconventional location (a church), this inspiring and engaging opera is a contemporary example Noh theater as envisioned by the legendary English composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976).

Begun in the 1300s, Noh is Japan’s oldest major theater art (combining music, poetry and dance) that is still regularly performed today. “Curlew River” is an adaptation of a classic Noh play about a woman driven mad by the mystery of her lost son who learns about her boy’s unfortunate fate during a chance encounter with a ferryman while crossing the nearby river.

Britten and his librettist William Plomer (1903-1973) transformed the play into a beautiful operatic Christian parable. This production is staged by the Pittsburgh Opera.
