This thought-provoking exhibition uses classic European works to take an enlightened new look at The Enlightenment.

The Enlightenment is a period of Western European history that explored new concepts in science, reason, economics, politics and human happiness. Most of the results have been positive for much of the world.  These include religious freedom, individual rights and representative government.

However, this same era saw the growth of European colonies to other continents. This resulted in new wars, the spread of diseases and the rise of slavery.

This exhibition brings together the work of artists who lived within the fluid imperial boundaries of Spanish, Dutch, French, and British Empires to explore the way that art and artists contributed to, reinforced, or undermined European imperial projects.
