With this informative hike, the National Park Service commemorates the Jumonville Affair, a little-known skirmish on May 28, 1754 that led to the battle at Fort Necessity — and sparked the French & Indian War.

The French & Indian War was an extension of the bitter Seven Year’s War (1754-1763) between the Kingdom Of Great Britain and the Kingdom Of France to determine which would be the dominate power in the Western World. The skirmish’s name is a reference to French Canadian officer Joseph Coulon de Villiers, Sieur de Jumonville (1718-1754).

Join a Park Ranger at 7:30 am in the secluded glen where it all went down. You’ll hear from the Virginia and the Canadian soldiers and try to determine for yourself who fired the shot that set the world on fire.

Wear sturdy shoes. This 1/4 mile hike starts along a level paved trail (narrow and often slippery) then descends into the glen as an unpaved and sometimes uneven trail.

Admission is free. For more information, call Josh Freeman at (724) 329-5473.
